Vehicle Requirements

Before your road test begins, an ICBC examiner conducts a mandatory pre-trip safety inspection. If your car has even one safety defect or legal violation, the examiner will reject the vehicle as not suitable for testing, cancel your appointment on the spot, and you will forfeit your test fee.We provide our students one page hand sheet which contains all the information for road test day written.

Top Reasons ICBC Will Reject a Vehicle (Automatic Test Cancellation)

Active Dash Cams or Navigation: Forward- or cabin-facing dash cameras and recording devices that are not unplugged/covered, or active GPS displays visible to the driver.

Cracked Windshield or Illegal Window Tint: Any stone chip or crack running across the driver’s side sweep area, or aftermarket tint on the front windshield or front driver/passenger side windows.

Critical Dashboard Warning Lights: Any active warning light that indicates a system failure—most commonly an illuminated Airbag (SRS), ABS, or Check Engine light.

Exterior Lighting Failures: Any non-functioning low beam, high beam, turn signal, or brake light (all three brake lights must work, including the center high-mount light), or cracked/missing lenses.

Damaged or Frayed Seatbelts: Driver or passenger seatbelts that do not latch smoothly, fail to retract properly, or display frayed, cut, or damaged webbing.

Faulty Doors or Windows: Doors that fail to open or latch properly from both the inside and outside, or a driver-side window that cannot roll down for hand signals.

Unsafe Tires: Low tire pressure, visible tread wear below legal depth, cord exposure, sidewall bulges, or driving on a temporary spare/donut tire.

Inoperative Horn: A horn that does not emit a clear, audible warning when pressed from the steering wheel.

Unclean Interior & Scent Hazards: Heavy clutter, garbage, pet hair, strong smoke/cannabis odor, air fresheners, or loose objects on the passenger floor that could impede pedal operation or examiner health.

Low Fuel or Battery Range: A gas tank that is on empty or an electric vehicle (EV) with insufficient battery charge to safely complete the full 45-minute testing route.
